Pathological Gambling
Misstep on the Path of Individuation
Whenever I mentioned the subject of my thesis, I would invariably be told of a horror story of some sort; my interlocutors always knew of “someone who had lost everything,” someone “who had lost his soul.” This is a topic that does not leave anybody indifferent and this very fact points towards the presence of an archetypal field. A Google search for “pathological gambling” produced 479,000 hits!
The addiction to casino gambling can be examined through three themes:
1. Ego isolation – escape from the responsibilities of the present.
2. Ego dissolution – the casino as the womb-like paradise (music, symbols, hypnosis).
3. Ego inflation – playing God.
All these themes of life represent missteps on the path of individuation.
This seminar delves into the testimonies of pathological gamblers (in the form of interviews and dreamwork), and analyses excerpts from F. Dostoevsky’s The Gambler, and excerpts from several movies to support the thematic analysis. Discussion caps off the lecture.
Un Faux-Pas Sur Le Chemin de L’Individuation
Chaque fois que je mentionnais le sujet de ma thèse, on me racontait invariablement une histoire d'horreur quelconque; mes interlocuteurs avaient connu «quelqu'un qui avait tout perdu», quelqu'un «qui avait perdu son âme». C'est un sujet qui ne laisse personne indifférent et ce fait même indique la présence d'un champ archétypal. Une recherche Google sur le “jeu pathologique” a produit 479 000 visites! La dépendance au jeu dans un casino peut être examinée à travers trois thèmes:
1. Isolation: l’Ego veut échapper aux responsabilités du temps présent.
2. Dissolution: Abaissement du niveau mental: l’Ego veut se dissoudre dans le paradis intra-utérin du casino (analyse de la musique, des symboles et des effets hypnotiques).
3. Inflation: l’Ego joue à devenir un Dieu.
Tous ces thèmes de la vie représentent des faux pas sur le chemin de l'individuation.
La conférence présente des témoignages de joueurs invétérés, des extraits du roman Le Joueur de F. Dostoievsky et des extraits de films. Une discussion clôture la séance.
